St. Cuthbert’s Hospice, Durham
Brief
The project required a new annex to be connected to the existing Hospice to accommodate 13 no. en-suite patient bedrooms together with various ancillary and support facilities.
Solution
DKS worked for ROK Construction to design a sensitive but simplified layout to in order to achieve the clients requirements within the available budget. A combined one and two storey solution was proposed with all patient areas on the ground floor together with chapel, treatment rooms, dining and community areas with the first floor containing staff offices and changing areas, Library and Meeting/Training facilities. All patient bedrooms have direct level access to the external balconies. The building sits within landscaped grounds set amongst mature trees and required detailed negotiations with the local planning officer to ensure that the existing trees were preserved. A new car park and discrete service area was also created to serve the development. External materials are brick and artificial slate with colours carefully selected to compliment the existing stone and slate building.
