Ophthalmology Theatre, James Cook University Hospital

Brief:

To design a single storey building to house 2 additional ophthalmology theatres in a very tight existing courtyard with existing buildings on all four sides within 1500mm.

Solution

To design a metal clad component system to minimize the need for scaffolding in such a confined area.  The roof void became the plant room space needed to incorporate the extensive air handling systems required.  The ground floor provided theatres, preparation rooms and scrub rooms together with staff accommodation and public waiting room.
