RyehillsSecondary School, Redcar

Brief

To construct a new (replacement) 1140-place Secondary School including proposals for the phased demolition of the existing and to ensure that the existing School continues to function

Solution

Working in partnership with Shepherd Construction and the client, DKS developed the design for a main block with central circulation spine arranged as a segmented arc, with radial blocks arranged from this to accommodate different areas of the curriculum. This enabled us to minimize the circulation space and reduce pupil travel distances between lessons, whilst also accommodating potential areas for future expansion. External hard play areas were located between the radial wings of the building which created several smaller play areas which were sheltered from the prevailing winds. The design and construction was considered  to be a benchmark for school building at the time due to the extremely low cost per sq.m achieved.
