Prior Pursglove VI FormCollege & Askham Bryan Agricultural College, Guisborough
Brief
To create a master plan which will satisfy the immediate needs of the two separate on site Colleges and also plan a strategy for it’s future development. The immediate requirement was to design new teaching and social accommodation which would form part of a plan to integrate the two Colleges on site in a way that would achieve economical sharing of facilities and still retain respective identities.
Both Colleges were to remain active learning environments during the implementation of the construction contracts.
Solution
The master plan was extremely important to the Colleges in identifying a strategy for further development on an already congested site but also useful in demonstrating to the planning authority that the immediate proposals formed part of a sensible plan for possible future development and as a result offered some reassurance to approving current proposals.
Working closely with representatives of both Colleges, we devised a plan to radically rethink the present campus layout and in particular the on-site traffic management issues which due to the daily congestion at peak times. By solving this issue we could then create a new centerpiece building and begin to pedestrianise large areas of the campus to significantly improve the safety and amenity of the campus for the students.
The sizing and arrangement of teaching spaces is designed to offer a degree of flexibility to meet future changes to the curriculum and informal social areas have been carefully incorporated for the students to meet and relax in whilst benefiting from discrete natural surveillance from members of staff.
The initial project has been sub-divided into phases in order to manage the construction around a live College site.
